Jack Russell Terrier

BREED HISTORY

200 years ago, in the South of England, a man of the robe who went by the name Reverend John Russell referred to as “Jack” among his friends decided he wanted a more efficient dog designed for foxhunting.

At this point of Reverend Jack Russell terrier’s creation, hunting was a favorite pastime. So, it isn’t strange that he wanted breeds that were bold and athletic, intelligent with a passionate inclination to hunt.

To create these breeds, John Russell purchased a tan and white Terrier name “Trump”, according to one of Russell’s friends, she had high stamina, formation and bravery to chase foxes out of their burrows, it is from his creations that the Jack Russell Terrier of the modern-day originates from.

TEMPERAMENT

Jack Russell terriers are a very energetic, fearless and highly intelligent breed. Socialization for the Jack has to start early, he must be exposed to new experiences and engage with different people to grow into a well-rounded dog.

The Jack Russell Terrier has a high sense of hunts, this ability is in them, and so they mostly do not indulge young children or approve of other animals, dogs included, and they may become aggressive towards animals they perceive as prey.

A well-rounded, Jack Russell Terrier is always very happy, welcoming and sweet. The dog loves to explore and always has an urge to wander off but also prospers in an environment that has a well-structured routine. So, a potential guardian must consider this.

ENVIRONMENT

Living with a Jack Russell Terrier requires you to be an outdoorsy fun and spontaneous person/family. The Jack Russell Terrier high energy levels keep it up and about and they fit perfectly right into a home with a big yard, lots of spaces and a large fence since they love to dig. The Jack Russell Terrier doesn’t sit quietly as they prefer to go on long runs or play a game of fetch.

EXERCISE

Jack Russell terriers are excessively energetic, and they thrive in high energy environments. If you happen to be one of those people who love the couch then this breed is not for you as they are most efficient when they are outdoors. This is why they require a lot of activities. Daily, the lowest time needed for exercise is 40 minutes.

GROOMING

Jack Russell Terrier’s appearance comes in three different types, smooth, rough and broken, however, it is easy to maintain.

The smooth, rough and broken coat sheds occasionally but you would need to use a dog comb weekly to keep it looking smooth and natural if you got a Jack Russell Terrier whose coat is broken and rough.

The dog also requires weekly brushing and a weekly ear check for excess wax and debris is necessary. Don’t forget the nails should also be trimmed every month.
